Obituary for Edmund J. Borges Jr.

Edmund J. Borges Jr., 61, passed away Monday, April 16, 2018 at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, No. Providence. He was the husband of Kathleen L. (Lester) Borges, whom he married April 29, 1984. Born in Providence, he was the son of Claire (Villeneuve) Borges of No. Providence and the late Edmund J. Borges Sr.
He worked for the state of Rhode Island as an ACI Guard for 27 years.
April 20, 2012 he was diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer. He fought hard and with his family's support he pulled through. He continued to stay cancer free for six years. Three years after being diagnosed he then found out that he needed a bone marrow transplant due to the chemotherapy meds; which was one of the many side effects. He received one after three months. He was grateful, but at the same time didn't understand how he got one so quickly. He would say, "I can't believe it. There are kids on the list who don't even get a chance, waiting years. Why me?" He was a special man and his journey wasn't over yet. He didn't have it easy; but you would never know it. Always asking "How are you doing? How was your day?" You would never know what this man was going through. He held this pain inside for some time now. I would say, "Daddy, you're a Beast": and to some, they would call him "Superman." That he was!
God heard our prayers. Angels were watching over him. He was able to teach us something. Instead of preparing himself to die, he learned how to live. He learned that life is short but beautiful; that even though time is measured, there is enough if you pay attention and that everything that matters in life is here, now. He picked up a guitar again. He loved his music and he played very well. He would forget about all the pain inside and allowed it to heal him. He had songs that he would sing and play guitar for my mom, brother, sister and me that meant something to him. He also loved the outdoors. No matter how he was feeling, he would go outside and watch his "pretty girl" Nala run around back and forth, play with sticks or jump around in the snow.
Some people would say, " I don't know what is easier, knowing someone you love is dying or having it happen just like that. And at that time, I didn't know that answer. You don't want to see the person who brought you into this world, the person who gave you life, just leave, or suffer; hanging on to a life that is no longer the same for them. However, in my father's case, we all had the opportunity to learn more about his life. We had the opportunity to see all the sacrifices he made for us throughout the years and how strong a father can be when all he wants to do is be there and take care of his family.
On April 16, 2018 the angels came for him. He passed peacefully, surrounded by all that he lived for; his family and his music. He promised me he would never stop holding my hand. I didn't let him break that promise, with his hand in mine and my hand on his chest. I felt his last heartbeat and saw him take his last breath. Also standing over him with a hand laying upon him was my mother, brother and sister. He was finally at rest, flying high and pain free; his dad waiting for him at the gate with open arms.
He will be missed and loved by many. Our lives' will never be the same. We will cherish every second that we spent with him and never forget everything he taught us. I will continue to tell his story like I said I would. He wanted me to connect with those diagnosed with bladder cancer; those fighting and struggling and tell his story. He is a legend and his soul will live on.
Besides his wife Kathleen, he is survived by a son John P. Borges of Pascoag; two daughters: Christina M. Borges of Putnam, CT and Tara L. Borges of Pascoag; two sisters: Donna Moniz of Somerset, MA and Karen Daggett of Brooklyn, CT and three grandchildren. Edmund's funeral services will be private at the request of the family.
